AI Overviews tracker: how to track AI Overviews and which tools do it
An AI Overviews tracker runs a fixed list of Google searches on a schedule and records whether an AI Overview appears, whether it names your brand and which pages it cites. Google Search Console now counts how often links to your site show up in AI Overviews and AI Mode — but not for which query, and not next to whom. A tracker fills those two gaps.
What an AI Overviews tracker records
AI Overviews are the generated summaries Google shows above the regular results for some searches. A tracker checks the queries you choose and stores what each Overview says. Think of it as one of the AI visibility tools, narrowed to Google.
Google says Overviews are shown only when its systems find them additive to classic Search, and that they often don't trigger. So a good tracker answers four questions for every query.
- Does an AI Overview appear for this query at all?
- Is your brand named in the text, and how early?
- Is one of your pages cited as a source?
- Which competitors are named or cited instead?
Tracking AI Overviews in Search Console
On 3 June 2026 Google announced generative AI performance reports in Search Console. As of 31 August 2026 they are rolled out to all websites. The report for Search includes impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode.
An impression here is a time a link to your site was shown in one of those features. Google's help page for the report lists four ways to group the data: by page, country, date and device.
That makes Search Console the free baseline for tracking AI Overviews — and shows its limits. There is no query view, so you cannot see which search triggered the Overview. It counts links, so a mention of your brand without a link does not register. And it says nothing about the competitors cited next to you.
What to look for in an AI Overviews tracker
Most rank trackers and AI visibility tools now list AI Overviews. These details separate them.
- Query-level results. You need to see which searches show an Overview and what it says — the view Search Console does not give you.
- Mentions and citations as separate numbers. Being named in the text and being linked as a source are different wins.
- AI Mode on the same plan. Some tools include it on the entry plan, others sell it as an add-on.
- Country and device settings. Results can differ between markets and between mobile and desktop.
- Cadence and cost per check. Daily checks on hundreds of queries add up, and usage-based tools price every one.
- Other engines. If your buyers also ask ChatGPT or Perplexity, one tool that covers them all beats two.
AI Overviews vs AI Mode
AI Overviews sit on top of a normal results page. AI Mode is Google's separate, conversational search experience. Search Console's report counts both, and most trackers below list them as two engines.
Coverage differs more than you might expect. Otterly.ai includes AI Overviews on every plan but sells AI Mode as an add-on, from $9 a month on Lite. HubSpot AEO and Mentionlytics cover ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, not AI Overviews at all.
Tracking tells you where — not how to rank
A tracker shows the queries you miss and the sources Google prefers. Getting into those Overviews is SEO and content work. Google's AI features documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
Our guide on how to rank in AI Overviews covers that work step by step. Come back to your tracker afterwards to see whether anything moved.
Where Llamat fits
Llamat is not a daily AI Overviews tracker. Its free report covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode are paid add-ons you can request at info@llamat.com.
If you want to know where you stand across AI engines before you pick a Google-only tool, start with the free AI visibility checker. The metrics behind the report are defined on our AI visibility page.
Llamat is our product — it is listed in the table with AI Overviews shown as a paid add-on, not as part of the free report.
