AEO tools: what each one does, what it costs and when you need it
AEO tools help you see and improve how answer engines — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and others — talk about your brand. They do three jobs: measure where you appear, help you improve the content engines draw on, and check that AI crawlers can reach your pages. Most start with measurement and add content features on higher plans.
What are AEO tools?
AEO tools are software for answer engine optimization: getting your brand named and cited in AI-generated answers. Their measurement side overlaps almost completely with the trackers in our AI visibility tools comparison. What sets them apart is what they add on top — recommendations, content features and technical checks.
The same products are sold as generative engine optimization tools, LLM SEO tools or AI search optimization tools. Each label comes from a different name for the same goal: answer engine optimization, generative engine optimization or LLM SEO. If the terms blur together, AEO vs GEO explains where they differ.
One label to watch: “AI SEO tools” usually means AI writing assistants for regular SEO content. They help you write faster. They do not tell you whether ChatGPT names you.
The three jobs AEO tools do
Every tool in this comparison does at least one of these. Few do all three well.
- Measure. Ask AI engines your buyers' questions and record mentions, recommendations, position, cited sources and the competitors named instead.
- Improve. Turn the gaps into work: content suggestions, AI-written drafts, page audits or agents that propose changes.
- Give access. Make sure AI crawlers can read your pages and that you are not blocking the engines you care about.
Measure first
Measurement tells you which questions you lose and to whom. Without it, content work is guesswork. Watch the difference between being mentioned and being recommended — our guide to AI visibility defines both.
If you have never measured, start small. Llamat's free AI visibility checker shows, for up to 20 questions on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, where you are named and who is named instead. Once you know which questions matter, a paid tracker makes sense.
Improve: what “optimization” means in practice
Improvement features vary widely. HubSpot AEO lists “prioritized AEO recommendations”. Rankscale offers “Rankscale Scout recommendations” and page audits. Writesonic pairs tracking with AI articles and an “Action Center”, and Goodie sells content and technical agents on top of tracking.
Surfer comes from the content side: it is a content optimization suite that sells AI Search Analytics as a separate plan. ZipTie sells content generation as an add-on at $20 a month per context.
Treat this as a to-do list, not a promise. No tool can make an engine name you. It can point to the questions you miss, the sources engines trust and the pages you have not written yet.
Technical access: can AI engines read your site?
The most basic AEO check needs no paid tool. Open your robots.txt and see which crawlers you block. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that blocking GPTBot, which crawls for model training, is a separate setting.
Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot if you want to appear in its search results. For Google, the AI features documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode need nothing extra: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google-Extended covers AI training and grounding in some of Google's other systems; to limit what Search shows, Google points to nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex.
Some platforms build checks like these into the product: Rankscale lists page audits, Goodie technical agents. Several — SE Ranking, Ahrefs, Nightwatch, Surfer, Rankscale, ZipTie and Goodie — also list MCP, which connects their data to AI assistants.
Do you need an AEO tool if you have an SEO suite?
Maybe not. Semrush includes AI visibility in its SEO + AI Search plans, from 50 prompts tracked daily for $199 a month. SE Ranking includes 100 daily prompts on its Core plan and sells more through an AI Search add-on. Ahrefs includes 5 to 20 tracked AI prompts in its Lite to Advanced plans and sells Brand Radar on its own.
Nightwatch, a rank tracker, includes AI tracking on every plan and links LLM citations to Google rankings. If you already work in one of these tools, check its prompt allowance before adding a separate platform.
What AEO tools cannot do
- Guarantee results. They measure and suggest. The engines decide what they say.
- Give one true number. Answers vary between runs, engines and locations, so a single check is a sample.
- Measure the same way. Some collect answers by API, others through the app interface, and results can differ.
- Replace SEO. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features, so the pages you build for search still count.
Llamat is our product — it is a measurement report, not an optimization tool, and it is listed below on the same terms as the others.
