AEO vs SEO: what changes and what stays the same

AEO vs SEO comes down to where you want to appear. SEO (search engine optimization) ranks your pages in a list of links, while AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your brand named inside the answer that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI features write. The groundwork is largely shared — the goal, the unit of success and the way you measure it are not.

SEO and AEO in one paragraph each

SEO is the job you already know. You make pages that search engines can crawl, understand and trust, so they rank for the keywords your buyers type. Success is a position on a results page and the clicks that follow.

AEO aims at a different result. Ask an AI assistant which CRM suits a five-person agency, and it writes one answer that names a handful of brands. Answer engine optimization is the work of making sure yours is among them. It is one part of your AI visibility — how AI systems see, describe and recommend your brand.

The two share most of their groundwork. They part ways on what counts as a win.

The difference between SEO and AEO

Six differences matter in practice. None of them means you drop what already works in search.

  • The goal. SEO wants the click. AEO wants the mention — ideally the recommendation — even when nobody clicks.
  • The unit. SEO ranks a page for a keyword. An AI answer is about brands, and it can name yours without linking to any page you own.
  • The query. SEO works with short keywords. AEO works with full questions that carry context: a budget, a use case, a “which is better” comparison.
  • The result. A results page shows a list you can scroll. An answer shows a paragraph and a short list, and a brand that is not in it is not in the decision.
  • The sources. Rankings depend mostly on your own pages and the links pointing to them. AI answers can also lean on what others say about you — reviews, retailers, editorial coverage and forums.
  • The measurement. SEO has rank trackers and Search Console. AEO means asking the questions, reading the answers and counting who gets named.

Where AEO and SEO overlap

For Google's own AI features, the overlap is close to total. Google's guidance on AI features says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode — no special schema markup, no new AI text files. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, the same bar as regular search. If Google's answers matter most to you, read how to rank in AI Overviews.

Outside Google, the basics still carry over. Assistants that search the web retrieve pages, so a page that can't be crawled or read can't be used. Clear headings, a direct answer near the top and specific facts — prices, specs, who a product is for — help a ranking algorithm and a model writing a summary alike.

So AEO and SEO are not two teams with two budgets. Most AEO is SEO done with a sharper question in mind: if an assistant had to answer this in three sentences, would your page give it what it needs?

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Answer engines still depend on the web that SEO maintains. Google's AI features draw on pages in its index, and assistants that browse can only fetch pages they can find. Stop doing SEO and you remove the material AI answers are made from.

What changes is how much SEO alone can tell you. A report full of rankings says nothing about whether ChatGPT recommends you — you can hold the top spot for a keyword and still be missing from the AI answer to the same question, or the other way round. Treat AEO as a layer on top: the same pages, checked against a second kind of result.

Why a top ranking doesn't guarantee a mention

A ranking is one page for one keyword. An AI answer blends several sources into a few sentences. The brands it names depend on how the question is phrased, which engine answers it and sometimes on the run itself — ask twice and the list can change.

An answer also names competitors next to you, or instead of you. That makes your place inside the answer matter: named first, named fourth or only listed in passing.

And a mention is not the same as a recommendation. An answer can list your brand among six options and actively suggest two others. SEO has no equivalent of that gap, so it needs its own numbers. We define them in the guide to AI visibility.

How measuring AEO differs from measuring SEO

SEO measurement is mature. Rank trackers report positions per keyword, and Search Console reports impressions, clicks and click-through rate. Since 31 August 2026, Search Console also has a generative AI performance report for every site — but it only counts how often links to your pages were shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no queries and no brand mentions.

AEO measurement starts with questions, not keywords. Write down what a buyer would ask an assistant — “best project tool for a small agency”, “X or Y for a beginner” — and put each question to each engine, more than once. Then count how often you are named, how often you are recommended, where you sit among the brands named and how often a source about you is cited, and note who gets named instead.

You can do this by hand in a spreadsheet. Or run up to 20 questions through our free AI visibility checker: it asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and sends one report by e-mail. Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Claude and Microsoft Copilot can be added as paid add-ons. To compare software that tracks this, see AI visibility tools.

How to run SEO and AEO as one plan

You don't need a second strategy. You need a second check on the one you have.

  • Keep the technical base. Crawlable, indexed, fast pages are the entry ticket for both.
  • Turn keywords into questions. For each keyword that brings you business, write the three or four full questions a buyer would ask an assistant.
  • Answer first. Open each section with a two- or three-sentence answer, then add the detail.
  • State the facts plainly. Price range, who it's for, how it compares. A model can't repeat what your page only hints at.
  • Publish fair comparison pages. Buyers ask assistants to compare options, and a clear “X vs Y” or “best for” page gives the answer something to draw on.
  • Earn mentions elsewhere. Reviews, retailer listings, trade press and community threads shape answers too.
  • Measure both. Keep your rank tracking, and put the same questions to AI before and after a change.

Where GEO fits

You will also meet GEO — generative engine optimization. It aims at the same AI answers as AEO, with a different history and emphasis. We untangle the two in AEO vs GEO, and LLM SEO is a third name for much of the same work.

Common mistakes

Six mistakes when teams add AEO to SEO

Most of them come from carrying SEO habits into a result that works differently.

  • Treating AEO as a replacement

Pausing SEO to chase AI answers removes the pages those answers are built from. Keep both running on the same pages.

  • Measuring AEO with SEO numbers

Rankings and sessions won't show whether an assistant names you. Count mentions and recommendations directly.

  • Checking one engine, once

ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity often answer the same question differently, and a single run can be a fluke. Ask each engine, more than once.

  • Stopping at the mention

Being listed is not being recommended. Check whether the answer actually suggests you, and where you sit among the brands it names.

  • Adding markup and waiting

Google says its AI features need no special schema. Structured data that matches the page is fine for regular search, but it won't stand in for content that answers the question.

  • Looking only at your own site

Answers also draw on reviews, retailers, press and forums. If those sources say little about you, your own pages carry the whole load.

FAQ

AEO vs SEO: common questions

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click through. AEO aims to get your brand named or recommended inside answers written by AI, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features. Much of the groundwork is shared, but the result and the way you measure it differ.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answers are built from pages that search engines and assistants can find and read, and keeping pages findable and readable is what SEO does. AEO adds a second target on top of the same pages.

Can you do AEO without SEO?

Not well. A page that isn't crawlable or indexed can't be retrieved, and Google says its AI features only use pages that are indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Start with sound SEO, then shape the content for answers.

How is measuring AEO different from measuring SEO?

SEO is measured with rankings, impressions and clicks. AEO is measured by asking the questions your buyers ask AI, more than once on each engine, and recording whether your brand is mentioned, recommended and cited, and which competitors appear instead. Rank trackers and Search Console don't show this.

Do I need schema markup for AEO?

Not for Google's AI features. Google states that no special schema.org structured data is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data can still support regular search results, as long as it matches the visible page.

Is AEO the same as optimizing for featured snippets?

It started close to that. The term was used for featured snippets and voice answers, where one answer is lifted from one page. Today it mostly means AI answers from assistants and Google's AI features, which often name several brands at once.
